With the many creative and detailed projects that we discuss here, we often recommend that you “clear the site” or “start digging” to begin an excavation.  However, sometimes that is much easier said than done.  If you find yourself looking at a plot of land in the Grand Rapids, MI area that is covered with garbage, foliage, trees, and pavement, clearing that space might feel like an overwhelming task.  But with some effort and a small investment, this job can be completed in no time.

Assess the Situation

To clear out the land near Grand Rapids, MI, it’s best to first assess what is actually on your land.  If there is a dilapidated structure or garbage, you may need to bring in a professional to determine if there are any hazardous materials on your site, such as lead paint, mercury, or asbestos.  Naturally, something like that would need to be taken care of by a licensed contractor and NOT mulched back into your land.

If you have trees that need to be removed, you can read more about tree removal here.

Determine the Best Method

Now that you have the lay of the land, you can determine the best method to complete your clearing.  Depending on the severity of your situation, you may be able to accomplish it on your own with a shovel, wheelbarrow, and dumpster.  Other hand tools such as a rake, chainsaw, and a hearty pair of gloves will also come in handy.  Another tool that you can operate on your own is a brush hog, which you can read about in more detail here.

For larger projects, it is better to bring in larger tools.  These include a bulldozer, mulcher, and/or an excavator.  Since these need to be operated by licensed professionals, this should be contracted through a licensed company. We can help you with that.

You’ve seen, you’ve planned; now it’s time to conquer.  Whether you’re doing it with friends or have decided to hire someone, enact your plan and start working on what you’re going to do with your freshly cleared plot.
